Certainly nothing to do with the emulator.
You're generally working here in black-on-white which may be what's confusing you. Remember that white is set, black is clear, so OR will merge all the white pixels, AND will include white only when source and destination are both white, else black.

Thanks for this. As you stated the colour selection was the problem.
there is a Dragon 64 word processing program in Dragon User September 1985 - page 8
i typed it in but its the disk version NOT the tape version (i want to add the tape patch) to it somehow !
