PSU board connector measurements

Post by robcfg »

Hello everyone!

Does anyone know the measurement of the pins or the type name of the connector that goes from the PSU board to the main board?

I'd like to experiment with a Mean Well PSU I bought that supplies +5, +12 and -12V, which is ideal for my Dragon 64.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Rob!

The power connector looks like a fairly standard 9 way 3.96mm pitch with 0.8mm square pins (sometimes 1.13mm round pins)

These should be compatible with something like Molex KK 396 series. There is a large choice of parts and it's a bit of trek through the datasheets to find parts that go together:

e.g.
Pin header

Crimp housing
https://www.molex.com/molex/products/pa ... 0009508090

Crimp (You may be able to solder to these if you don't have a suitable crimp tool)

Pre-crimped lead (very convenient)

Example sources in the UK, though I imagine you would be able to find them closer to home:

https://uk.farnell.com/molex/45570-3000 ... dp/3215851
https://uk.farnell.com/molex-brad/79758 ... dp/3289582

Actually these longer pre-crimped leads might be better because you can cut them in half to make two:

Please double check that the parts go together before you order them. Good luck with the PSU :)

Hi Stewart,

Thanks a lot!

I've found the following:

https://www.elfa.se/en/pre-crimped-lead ... p/30162343
https://www.elfa.se/en/kk-396-receptacl ... p/14301308

I think these go well together.

Also, I could buy two premade cable assemblies, one with 4 circuits and another one with five:

https://www.elfa.se/en/cable-assembly-9 ... p/30156701
https://www.elfa.se/en/cable-assembly-9 ... p/30156697

Any thoughts?

They look like they will work. Or at least the datasheets refer to each other, so fingers crossed :)

Having separate 4 and 5 way connectors does sound like a good idea though I'm not sure if they will both fit at the same time unless you bend the pins or trim the housings. If you look at the width of the web between the contact openings in the housing, this would be doubled for two connectors side by side, plus there are some features at the top of the housing that would also interfere.

Might be worth checking ebay too. Plenty of hits for Molex KK 396.

I realised that I could partly use an ATX psu connector, so I used that and managed to get it working! :D

I'm quite happy with the result as I don't depend anymore on an external transformers, and got a composite video cable integrated on the Dragon, so now it's really plug'n'play

Plus, it's 100% reversible, no permanent modifications.

And now some pictures for your delight:
