Is it sensible to look at pulling apart a surplus PCI adapter to get the correct edge connector size and contacts, then connect up the remainder using a stripboard?

I've never tried it, but it seems a common tactic.

I recently saw an old photo of some card edge 'tips' which you solder onto a strip board. Looked amazing but I can't find them anywhere.

Hi,
there used to be experimental ISA-boards for IBM-PC-compatibles, like that one on the photo:

I abused it with a saw, as you can see. It was full size, quite huge. Maybe you can still get those in some electronics shops or ebay? Is that, what you're looking for?

Maybe you can use something like this? The card edge tips look a bit short but could still work.

Oh I see, ISA boards are hard to find these days and extremely expensive.
But how about that:

It's just 2.25€ (UP 720HP, Streifenrasterplatine, Hartpapier, 160x100mm) at http://www.reichelt.de
