I made contact with John Botibol last night, creator of the JCB Microsystems Speech Synthesiser. He is doing well, living in France and nearing the big 7-0. He's not worked with home computers since 1984, when he went into professional IT.
Unfortunately he doesn't have any of the details of his work back then, as all have been lost, but he sends his regards to the community. He has fond memories of the 6809 and hooking into the BASIC ROM, which is apparent from my disassembly of his cartridge. In his words, "there was no Stack Exchange back then, so everything was new"!
