Wessex Wyvern expansion box?

Post by tjewell »

I stumbled across this while doing tweet research - a mention of a Wyvern expansion module for the Dragon, made by Wessex Microcomputers with help from Compusense, back in November 1983.

Now, a few years later, Compusense are indeed offering an expansion box - but I've pretty sure that's the big black Race 4-cart unit I've got. I think I've read somewhere that Compusense were selling it (where did I read that?). And certainly, this doesn't offer all the exciting things the Wyvern has - IEEE interface, memory expansion etc.

So any idea what happened to the Wessex Wyvern anyone?

Interesting!

We dumped the rom of a MTX-IO board recently, and with this information I can create a wiki page for it.

MTX-IO thread here: https://archive.worldofdragon.org/phpBB ... =9&t=11059

I've found a reference to the Wessex expansion box in, of all places, the last issue of Dragon Update (The NDUG magazine), where Clive Scott is complaining that it doesn't work very well! So at least we know it existed ...

Interesting that it was meant to be controlled by software, so it doesn't sound like my Race expansion box (I did wonder if it was the same thing).

More interesting is that EliteCalc works on the Dragon! That's a CoCo cartridge I thought?

Actually no - scratch that. It seems that Microcare 'Elite Calc' did have a Cartridge version.

And I've found another expansion box - this time it's 6 (yes, SIX) expansion sockets on Andtek's ANDBUS. Another expansion I'd never heard of until I saw it in the brochure for 1985's 6809 Colour Show.
