Well I'm all set up for tomorrow. I've fired up my iPod (had to find it first) and have installed a file manager app so that I can actually play the WAV file. I just hope it loads!
Most games that I've tried have loaded this way.

I am assuming that I use CLOADM and then type EXEC at the prompt?

Most probably.

If you get a ?FM error, then try CLOAD and RUN.

My bet is on Cyrus, it's a very advanced chess program......

I also think Cyrus will win. Sargon II is a pretty tough cookie, but with the Dragon's superior RAM and processor there is certainly scope for a far more advanced program than Sargon.

I would just like this opportunity to state that I can't recall EVER having checkmated Sargon II, even on level 0. The best I have managed is stale mate on several occasions. In fact, as I mentioned, even my Saitek Mephisto (a dedicated Chess computer from present day) was beaten by it every time. Conversing with fellow VIC 20 fans it also seems that my experience is certainly not unique. Although Sargon II can be defeated, and has been by some, it does seem to be a rare event indeed.

Anyway, let's assume that Cyrus does win, shall we then plan a re match Cyrus V BOSS?

Well I just played a marathon session of Sargon II in the VIC 20 Corner Vs Cyrus Chess in the Dragon 32 Corner!

The first game had Sargon II on Level 0 and Cyrus on Level 1, so that is each game's opening level. It's worth remembering that Sargon II has 7 levels compared with Cyrus's 9 levels. On both games, the highest level takes so long to play that you may well burn out the PSU, if not your patience!

The first game was very long, I would say that Cyrus definitely had the upper hand throughout, but Sargon defended admirably. Unfortunately the game did not get through to its conclusion as towards the end I entered a move incorrectly into Sargon II, and I'm not sure if a move can be undone in that program. Cyrus had reduced Sargon to just its King left (I think), whereas Cyrus had King, plus two queens and a pawn (maybe even a knight)

I'm quite sure it would have ended with Sargon Checkmated by Cyrus.

I then cranked Sargon II up to level 1 and left Cyrus on level 1. In this game Sargon II performed far better, and seemed to have the upper hand. Sargon II check mated Cyrus in 31 moves.

Sargon II played white in both games. Game notation to follow when I have a bit more time. Also more games to be played. I would like to see Cyrus play White for instance as well.

Sargon II takes far longer to think about each move in Level 1 than Cyrus does, maybe somewhere between a minute and two minutes.

Very interesting so far though; well at least I think so!

Very interesting, indeed!
I love what you are doing here.... the battle of the 8-bit chess' ;-)

...the ultimate would of course be Sargon II L7 vs Cyrus L9, but I understand what you say about it taking a looooong time

As promised the game play notes for Game 1. Unfortunately VIC was run a little bit ragged in this one and I believe it would have been check mated very soon had I not mucked up the move!

Error realised as the move could not be made. I believe the Dragon would have promoted another Pawn and checkmated soon after.

I'm glad you like it Vato. Certainly I think this 8 bit chess battle is long overdue.

I was very impressed with the dragon 32 and Cyrus Chess; I thought Sargon II was hard!!

I think I'll probably take it up to level 3 or 4, we'll see how we go. My patience doesn't stretch to L7 and L9 though I'm afraid! I have to think of my ageing PSUs as well. ;)3

Given time the ZX Spectrum and C64 will also be entering the ring!

As promised here are the game notes from the second match, the one in which Sargon II won. It was actually 33 moves, not the 31 I previously mentioned. Still pretty good though.

What we must consider is the disparity between levels. There are 7 on Sargon II, but 9 on Cyrus. Sargon starts on 0, Cyrus on 1
Now with both machines on their opening levels, Cyrus had not managed to Check Mate Sargon II in 61 moves, it would have happened, maybe inside 70 or 80 moves I think. Moved up just one notch Sargon manages to defeat Cyrus in just 33 moves. The next game will be Sargon II level 1, Cyrus Level 2, and we'll see what happens.

Code: Select all

VIC 20 Sargon II Vs Dragon 32 Cyrus Chess Round 2
Sargon II plays White Pieces – Level 1
Cyrus Chess Plays Black Pieces – Level 1 NB there is a level 0 on Sargon II, but not on Cyrus.
