sorchard showed me a simple method for determining whether a machine is PAL or NTSC by timing a video frame (in case that's useful) but obviously not all Dragons are PAL and not all CoCos are NTSC.

A.K.Dewdney was a notable Canadian mathematician and computer scientist (amongst other things). It's highly possible you've read an article of his but probably not in the pages of Dragon User.

I was actually in the pub yesterday with Tony Brightman, co-author of Quazimodo. He and his brother were still at school when it was published by Cable. Tony would have been thirteen or fourteen at the time.
