Games for 6309 equipped Dragons

Post by pser1 »

Hello,
I have converted for the Tano/Dragon computers three CoCo games that have been modified to work with HD6309 CPUs by L.Curtis Boyle
The games are:
- Color Car Action - this one seems 'new' for the Dragon
- Touchstone - this one existed before and here it comes in 6809 and 6309 versions
- Gantelet - this one seems to me 'new' for the Dragon (requires 64k - careful!)
Hope you'll enjoy them. They work well on XRoar too
cheers

Hello Robert,
according to L.Curtis Boyle the movement and scrolling should be smoother and even a bit faster unless everything is interrupt driven.
Anyway two of them do not exist in the archive or I have failed searching for them. So, I think that these should be added to the archive
to expand the Dragon games collection :D
cheers

Hello,
I have converted for the Dragon two more games pacthed by L.Curtis Boyle so that they take advantage of the CPU HD6309.
I am attaching here a zip with the five games I have been working on.
In the old ones I added a binary and maybe a bas to enter PMODE3 instead of artifacted PM4. Not always better but it's a choice ...
The games are:
- Color Car Action (new for Dragon) - PM4 and PM3 for 6309 only
- F16 Assault (new for Dragon) - PM4 and PM3 for 6309 only (requires 64k)
- Gantelet (new for Dragon) - PM4 and PM3 for 6309 only (requires 64k)
- Marble Maze (new for Dragon) - PM4 and PM3 for 6309 only
- Touchstone (we already had it) - PM3 only but for both 6809 and 6309
enjoy!

Hello,
I have converted the 6809 versions that L.Curtis Boyle sent gently to me, so that
the users that haven't upgraded the CPU inside their Tano/Dragon will be able
to play these five games.
You will find a virtual file that contains (6309) in the filename to tell it is the 'special' version
and another one that doesn't have any CPU mention. This is the std 6809 version.
enjoy!

EDIT. I'm sure you know that, but keep in mind that Gantelet and F-16 Assault requiere
64k machines!

Hello,
Another nice game optimized for the HD6309 by L.Curtis Boyle.
I have converted for the Tano/Dragon the two versions, one optimized for the MC6809 and another optimized for the HD6309
I am attaching here a zip with the two game versions and the game manual
The game is
- Rush'n Assault by Diecom Products (1988)
Both disks have a basic program to start the game in PMODE4 artifacted
RUSH68.BAS or RUSH63.BAS
If anyone wants to give a try to the PMODE3 version then use these ones
RUS68PM3.BAS or RUS63PM3.BAS

Cheers

Ps. I forgot to say that this one could not have been done without the great help from Ciaran Anscomb (aka Sixxie) telling me
how to use and search for info inside XRoar snapshots. Great tool!

Hello,
I forgot to add some screen shots to give a rough idea about those games.
I know the PM3 images are not very good, but it could be done ...
cheers

Hello Tano/Dragon users,
I played RUSH'N ASSAULT with my sons and they told me that it would be nice to have a 'key' to throw a bomb instead of a long press
on the JSTK button that simply wastes 5-6 bullets, pity!
I looked at the disassembled source code and found the place where the buttons are tested. I have added a keyboard test when the
program calls the JSTK ROM function in a way that it detects and uses these keys:
For Right Player: '1' to fire one bullet - 'A' to throw a bomb
For Left Player: '9' to fire one bullet - 'I' to throw a bomb
Of course, if you choose only one button joystick, then it will keep on waiting for a long button press to throw a bomb,
meanwhile it will be wasting bullets :-(
When I decided to play them on the real Tano with the VGA module (nice artifacted PM4) I realized that in any converted 'CoCo' game,
once sound is activated, the JSTK read routine generates a well know noise for the Dragon users. Very awful to me!
I have 'intercepted' the Joystick ROM call and inserted before an AudioOff so that the noise is no more generated.
To avoid editing the binaries, I have patched them from the Basic loader, easier for me. This affects all of the games except for the
F-16 because it was programmed natively instead of using ROM calls and so the audio is cut before reading JSTKs

Color Car Action v1.2
Gantelet v1.1
Marble Maze v1.1
Rush'n Assault v1.2

I include here the affected games, both for CPUs (6809 and 6309) in two zips for short and long filenames
In the pack come the two versions for a game recently optimized for the HD6309 by L.Curtis Boyle, who has sent to me both
the original and the 6309 version.

enjoy

Hello,
I have just converted another game from CoCo. I got it from L.Curtis Boyle who corrected a flaw
that made it crash when played on a machine with a HD6309
This game was never published for the Tano/Dragon computers ...

- Bugs-II (1984)(Four Star Software)

The game plays without problems on our machines even with keyboard, I hope.
I have converted the native checks done by the program for every keypress it waits for.
Not very nice, but you can play it in PMode3 issuing BUGS2PM3 to start the game
In the zip you will find the manual in pdf format

enjoy
