Return of the Beast

Post by sorchard »

I would like to share a demo of an arcade-style game I've been working on for a while. Rather gratuitously called 'Return of the Beast', it's a sequel to my earlier game ROTABB (Revenge of the etc.) There's still quite a bit of work to do but there's enough there now to finally be able to put out a demo.

It can be played with keyboard (left/right/space) or the right joystick (point & shoot).

My thanks to Sixxie for xroar, asm6809 & CyD and to Bosco for great ideas, inspiration and motivation.

In case anyone is wondering, it's all done in software, no hardware tricks and no speed up poke 8-)

Enjoy! :)

Edit: Attached version is now a bit easier to play and includes a vdk image

Great!

Love the sweet multidirectional scroll and the nice use of dither.

Keep up the good work!

Hi Steve,
great job!
I know I am not a good gamer, so I lasted not too much time after quite some tries.
Will have to try it on the D64 with joystick.
cheers

Hey, nice game demo!

Good scrolling and very nice music. Quite a few sprites on-screen too.

I hope you turn it into a full game.

Always exciting to see brand new games being developed. :D :D

Music and scrolling are great! I'm very impressed. It's going to be a worthy successor to ROTABB.

Keep up the amazing work Stew! :D

Very cool ! ROTABB is one of my fav Dragon games, This has the potential to be every bit a good.

Finding the difficulty brutal lol but still fun and always good to get new stuff for the Dragon

Looking forward to seeing it completed

Great work

Thanks to all for giving it a try and for the positive feedback! I do fully intend to finish this game as it's the one I've always wanted to create for the Dragon :)

Looks like I misjudged the difficulty, (had a bit of practice!), so I've updated the file in the first post with one that's easier to play. It also includes a vdk image for convenience.

It reminds me Space Pilot for Commodore but with better sound and graphics.

Couple of developments:

Source code of the demo can be found here:

I'm also trying my hand at a blog. I'm hoping the extra commitment will help me finish the game, plus remind me how it works :)
