Wiki: "hidden" pages...

Post by jedie »

I now see the Wiki page http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index.php?title=MC6847 - found by random ;)

I found also a few pages, that are interesting, but hard to find :(

So i started to add a few categories and "tag" some pages with them.

A list of existing categories is here: http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index. ... &limit=500
There exist more than 200 uncategorized pages: http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index. ... 0&offset=0

e.g.: Add all pages about persons and companies into the category:

Code: Select all

[[Category:Documentation]] [[Category:History]] [[Category:Person]]

[[Category:Documentation]] [[Category:History]] [[Category:Company]]

See also the Special Pages link in the menu, the "ophaned pages" list all pages that are not linked to.

Yes, http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index. ... 0&offset=0 listed 105 "ophaned pages"...

What i mean is, that there are so many information in the Wiki, but you didn't see them directly... You have to search and hope that you search with the right keywords ...

Absolutely, thanks a lot for cleaning up this! The categories are of great help to find some treasures. I was hoping the "orphan" list can help to find the remaining "lost" pages as you progress on it.

There is so mutch to do, to cleanup every page...

Now i have "tagged" the "Magazines" pages... Then i have a idea: In the Main menu is the "Magazines" pages linked: http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index. ... =Magazines

Now i have moved this pages to http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index. ... :Magazines

IMHO it's a good idea to use the "Category" pages, instead of a own linked pages, isn't it? The goal is, that there are a updated list of all pages in the category. So, pages can't be missed.
e.g.: The page http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index. ... =6809_User was not tagged and was not in the "Magazines Table"... Now i have tagged the page and so, it's in the category list...

What's about the idea to do the same for these pages:
http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index.php?title=Books
http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index. ... le=Manuals
http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index. ... e=Fanzines
http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index. ... =Technical

maybe we can do the same with many other "link like" pages?!?

I think I prefer the old version of "Magazines", and that we should try to structure the information explicitly and only use categories as a tool. I can imagine some tree structures where all sub-trees belong to the category but it will just be too messy to see them all listed. There is always the Category: link at the bottom for looking them up.

Hi all, I was thinking the same - we have a lot more info in our wiki than might be obvious at first glance. For example, to find out all the exciting stuff going on with DWLOAD etc, you need to follow a tiny little link called 'drivewire' in a section called 'informations' at the end of the Technical page linked from the right hand navigation bar. Obviously, if you know what you want, you can search for it - but sometimes you don't know what you want!

I agree that the 'categories' are great for 'find me pages like this' style research, but I think a few more top level pages to point people in the direction of what they're most likely to be after would help too. The Facebook group has a lot more 'new' users, and I hear the same questions over and over:

"Where can I do download game X? How do I run it? Where's the instructions?"
"How do I use floppies/SD cards/transfer files from my PC?"
"How do I fix a broken Dragon? Where are the schematics etc?"
"How do I program a Dragon? Where are the memory maps, 6809 instructions etc?"

(Okay, the last one is less common on Facebook, more common on the forum, often from me!)

We've got answers to all this - plus a huge archive of historical info too.

I'm not being hypothetical here - I'm happy to volunteer to trawl through the pages, link up the orphans and bring some of the useful-but-hidden content to the fore. Any thoughts or ideas before I start?

Cheers, Tony

As you may have noticed, the sidebar has been re-ordered and some of the links go directly to the Category page - this is does mean we need to ensure we set the Categories correctly (thanks to those doing that already) but it also has uncovered some previously buried pages.

I am playing with a new look for the front page - which when done will provide easier navigation to all the more common points of interest.

Ah, that looks good! Slowly but surely, I'm going through the pages getting them categorised (easy ones first!). I was wondering if you could bring a link to the 'documentation' category to the side bar too - we've got lots of good stuff in that category (and more to come) that's a bit hidden away at the moment - for example, the Drivewire docs are at the end of the Technical Publications page, under 'Informations' (sic). If we have that, I can use the Documentation category, and some sub-categories to bring a lot of stuff closer to the home page.

Thanks, Tony

Okay all, I've got the 105 orphaned pages down to just 12! (Although I've possibly overused the category 'documentation', and will want to go back to that!). Does leave me a few that I'm not sure what to do with, or don't have permission to remove. Any thoughts on this lot?

http://archive.worldofdragon.org/index. ... rizedPages

1. Applications - This feels like a 'non-page' to me. I agree we should have a software category to describe things that aren't games, but this has a long to one application and one publisher, and that's it.
2. Articles - it's empty, and we don't have an 'articles' category, nor can I spot anything obvious to file under this.
3. Basic Concepts - they're the publisher of a book called 'Teach Yourself Dragon Basic' ... maybe .. anyone know for sure? Or was this a page to list introductory books?
4. Books - trying to resist the temptation to categorise this as 'documentation' to make it disappear!
5. Dragon History - I'd like to put this under 'documentation' and/or history - but I can't edit it.
6. Insert Publisher - err?
7. Load And Go With Your Dragon - Don't quite understand how we categorise books. What does it mean by 'book in archive'?
8. Logic 3 - We don't have book publisher pages, so we don't need this?
9. Main Page - perhaps it doesn't need a category, but I can't edit it anyway!
10. Perhipherals - Obviously a typo, but I don't know how to remove it!
11. Stone Raider II - err, it has categories! What's up there?
12. Toolkit - I guess it's development software?

Well, I'll keep shuffling stuff around - 'documentation' and 'software' need a bit of love, plus I think a FAQ would be useful, given what I'm seeing in the Facebook group. Something to do in the long summer evenings!

Cheers, Tony
