DragonMMC another excellent device I got mainly for the CAS support and save state, (save state is the main reason being able to put a game down for later). wont open VDK files but opens DSK files no issues.. bah!!! yes, composer X is disk based. Synther 7 seems to be a kind of soft that doesn't fit your needs.
Orchestra is a ROM based program that works both with tapes and disks

Does any music software (sequencers etc) exist for the dragon? I know of one program called "music maker" but I can't figure out how it works - and documentation seems nonexistant. Great Ciaran, now it is fast enough to want to play it .... How could I play a game on XRoar having a chance to move Q*Bert? Despite I choose Ctrl+K I have not got to move in any direction I think that last version accepted (way too slow) Up+Left cursors to move as it seems that moves *must* be made...
