Yeah, just standard SG12 for the first part and then a switch to bitmap mode for the end picture.
simon: Well, it's not like the cost of writing one or two registers matters in the slightest when doing the buffer flip, so nothing I put any effort into optimizing.

The buffer flip is just a normal double-buffer, ie. I draw the effect in one frame, then flip on VBL to avoid tearing caused by drawing graphics at the same point the raster beam is at.
